Is music therapy?

Nephrology nurses have witnessed the immense advancement of dialysis treatments in the past 20 years. Clinics now utilize computerized dialysis machines with ultrafiltration, sodium modeling, and units with non-reuse dialyzers. However, the one factor that remains constant is the anxiety and fear every patient experiences with the initiation of dialysis treatment.

In an effort to improve treatment, "music therapy" was introduced at a San Antonio dialysis clinic. The purpose was to determine the efficacy of this type of therapy in helping reduce anxiety levels and depression. The goal of this project was to use music as a tool to allow patients to participate in their healthcare program.

Background of the Problem

Attempts to educate patients pre-ESRD have been initiated in this San Antonio hemodialysis clinic. This has included the early placement of fistulas and dissemination of information regarding diet and medications. Patients have also been given literature, videos, and tours in the dialysis units, as well as staff introductions and direct preparation for dialysis treatment.
