Minimum wage--does anyone care anymore? Next hike drawing little attention.

In 2007 when President George W. Bush signed the Fair Minimum Wage Act, which amended the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and mandated an incremental increase in the national minimum wage, emotions ran high. Some Mississippians were even more animated over the issue when, for the first time ever, the Mississippi Legislature took up the debate of crafting a state minimum wage law.

The national minimum wage has since fallen somewhat under the radar screen. The initial increase to $6.55 per hour went into effect in July 2008 and grabbed headlines and drew often heated debate. The second increase to $7.25 per hour goes into effect next month, and has garnered relatively little attention.

While it may not currently be front-burner material, it is clear that minimum wage still affects the blood pressure of those on both sides of the issue.
