In an effort to increase job flexibility, enhance quality of life, and reduce over head costs, I took my firm to a "virtual office system"--by which I mean the four of us (myself and my three long-term certified general appraiser employees) work out of our respective homes. We rarely see each other--but we communicate more effectively and better than when we were spending nearly $5,000 per month for our physical office space. We are doing so through a phone system that allows us to all stay connected, and still provides our clients with a single point of contact.

When we "went virtual" one of the first things we employed was IM (Instant Messaging). This handy tool allowed each of us access to the others when we were online; we could communicate without picking up a phone. This is great for quick questions or the quick transfer of files, and especially handy for my employees to get a hold of me, since I am always on the phone (no comments, please).
