Making environmental literacy a foundation for nursing advocacy.

In the recent months, in tandem with a presidential campaign and subsequent administrative change, we have heard more and more about the importance of thinking "environmentally." From energy policy to economic recovery, and peppered in public service announcements in our living rooms, we have focused our attention on the fragility of our planet coupled with opportunity for new perspectives that will set priorities--and financial incentives--toward caring about what we do to our Earth. Environmental consciousness is not new, even in the context of environmental health, and it has certainly been a major component of nursing education when we teach public health. Making our nursing students "environmentally literate" is a different concept that warrants a new perspective on how we can give nurses voice to problems that threaten our world.
