The term "school grounds" used to mean swings, slides and teeter totters. These days, at about 30 schools in the Eugene-Springfield area, it also means lettuce, peas, squash, tomatoes - even garlic.
On Wednesday afternoon, Tracy Gagnon, who oversees gardening activities at 12 elementary schools, divided a dozen students at River Road Elementary School, where working in the school's garden is a "choice" class in addition to the regular curriculum, into two high-energy groups. One set out with an adult volunteer to water raised beds filled with greens - bok choy, spinach, lettuce and kale - while the rest took up their trowels to help Gagnon plant cherry tomatoes and cucumbers.
Even before that, as they sat on upended lengths of stumps waiting for their assignments, Gagnon - who's finishing her first year and hoping for a second with the nonprofit School Garden Project as an AmeriCorps volunteer - gave the kids a hands-on lesson about microorganisms.
