While coaches in the big conferences grumble about the regional system to qualify athletes for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, coaches in mid-major conferences are strongly in favor of it, UC Santa Barbara coach Pete Dolan said Saturday.

A member of the executive committee of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, and speaking on behalf of the coaches in the Big West Conference, Dolan said the regional system is the most equitable way for athletes to earn the right to compete in the NCAA championships.

"Head-to-head, on the day, just seems to me - and everybody's entitled to their opinion - more fair than getting a mark in March and then riding that all the way until June," he said.

"I think that's what it comes down to, what's more fair overall."
