He ran to win.

Galen Rupp didn't need to go hard, didn't have to push the pace. It wasn't necessary to try to pull away from Matt Centrowitz. A personal record wasn't important.

No one would have been too disappointed if he'd pulled up and cruised to the finish in the 1,500 meters, because in the NCAA West Regional, fifth place was as good as first, and the goal was to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Winning matters there; it was optional Saturday afternoon.

Rupp finished second to his freshman teammate at a distance that's not his forte, then said he was satisfied with a personal-best time of 3 minutes, 39.14 seconds. But sure, finishing first would have been nice.
