With tears streaming down her face and her voice quivering, Oregon's Lucy Cridland tried to describe just how she saved her season and validated four seasons of tireless work.

"Four inches," she said, holding her hands barely apart. "It isn't that much space, but it was enough for me."

Cridland, a senior discus thrower from Portland, stamped her ticket to the NCAA Championships for the first time in her career with a fifth-place finish on Friday at the NCAA West Region Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field.

Her throw of 166 feet, 11 inches on her sixth and final attempt moved her from ninth place to fifth, just four inches ahead of Arizona's Taylor Freeman (166-7) and into the last automatic qualifying spot for nationals.
