PeaceHealth Medical Group is planning to close its Nurse Midwifery Birth Center in Eugene on June 29, and has yet to set a firm date to begin constructing a new birth center near Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, according to women who were planning to use the center in order to deliver outside a hospital setting.

The closure means that women who prefer the homelike setting of a birth center may be without that option for at least nine months to a year, assuming PeaceHealth starts building a new center this summer. Instead, they'll have to give birth in a hospital, or opt for a home birth.

That's a problem for Rachel Howe of Eugene, whose due date is June 28, one day before the birth...
