MASTER DISTRIBUTORS--distributors who sell to other distributors--perform a valuable role in a typical metals market, but their function in today's low-demand, low-inventory environment is especially important.
With the economy in such disarray and demand for metals so weak, it has become routine for service centers to source small quantities from a nearby peer rather than placing large orders with the mills.
"What I am seeing is a lot more trade going on within the distribution channel," says Faruk Zia, president and CEO of Angeles Steel Service in Santa Fe Springs, Calif. "Instead of buying a carload of coils or plate from the mill, service centers talk to each other and work out a trade. Even competitors, perhaps through a broker, are putting their heads together."
Likewise, Dave Lerman, chairman and CEO of Steel Warehouse in South Bend, Ind., is seeing more orders from smaller service centers as they seek to buy only enough to meet their day-to-day needs. Destocking throughout the supply chain will soon reach a point where companies have to begin replenishing inventories, he predicts. "At some point, to meet equilibrium even in today's economy, activity will have to pick up across the board," he says, perhaps as much as 10 to 20 percent by year's end.
In addition to offering an alternative to ordering in mill quantities, master distributors have helped remove redundant and excess inventories from the distribution channel. Using a local master distributor as a quick source for special or out-of-stock items allows service centers to cut the slow-movers from their stock while improving inventory turns.
This year's MCN Directory of Master Distributors includes 269 companies that consider themselves either full- or part-time master distributors. Some actively market their products and services to other distributors, while others take a more passive approach, filling orders from other distributors--even rivals--as they would any customer's order.
MCN data indicates that roughly 64 percent of master distributors offer carbon steel, 41 percent carbon alloys, 56 percent stainless steel, 34 percent aluminum, 31 percent galvanized/ coated products, 22 percent copper and brass, 13 percent tool steel and 13 percent titanium and other rare metals.
During normal times, perhaps 20 percent of the sales volume in metals distribution can be accounted for by transactions among distributors. Given the current market situation, that percentage could be significantly higher, though the overall volume of steel, aluminum and copper products changing hands may be less. With end-use demand so weak, however, it no doubt remains true that one of the largest customer groups for service centers today is other service centers.
