New roof-strength standard is not enough, safety advocates say.

A new federal standard for automobile roof strength is a step in the right direction but does not go far enough to fully protect car occupants in rollover crashes, auto safety advocates say.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued the new final rule on April 30. Under the old standard, vehicles that weigh up to 6,000 pounds were required to withstand 1.5 times their weight, applied to one side of the roof; the new standard requires vehicles to withstand 3 times their weight, applied to both sides of the roof. The 1.5 standard had remained the same since 1973, as safety advocates repeatedly urged the agency to raise it.
