Software companies providing Web security and anti-virus/anti-spyware services secured the top two spots on the Business Journal's 2009 Software Companies list.
The leading software company, ranked by 2008 revenue from San Diego County operations, for the second year in a row is Websense. It reported more than double the revenue of its nearest competitor.
Websense generated $295.9 million in revenue in 2008, a 25 percent increase compared with 2007. The publicly traded company, led by CEO Gene Hodges, had 550 full-time local employees as of Jan. 1, by far the largest amount on the list.
No. 2 is ESET, which saw a whopping 78 percent revenue increase on the year. It amassed $111.4 million last year, up from $62.65 million in 2007. CEO Anton Zajac's business had 132 full-time local employees at the start of the year.
Accenture ranks third with $34.45 million in revenue from county operations in '08. It did not appear on last year's fist, but acquired Maxim Systems, No. 3 on the 2008 list, in December 2007 and reported a 19 percent increase in local revenue on the year.
Fourth-ranked DefenseWeb Technologies made $15.5 million in revenue, up from $11.11 million in 2007.
No. 5 is SmartDraw.com, which reported $14.55 million in revenue.
WordSmart is No. 6 with $13.8 million, a 70 percent increase from 2007, and 75 local employees.
Sentek Consulting had the highest percentage gain among the 12 businesses on the list as revenues soared 115 percent to $9.1 million. That sent Sentek to the No. 8 slot after it ranked 13th on the 2008 list. Sentek also reported that its local work force rose to 50 full-timers as the year got under way, compared with 33 at the same time in 2008.
The final member of the 12-company list is JP Communications, with $2.2 million and 14 local full-time workers.
Only one business reported a decline in revenue from 2007 to 2008. Financial Database Services saw its sales drop to $5.08 million from $5.1 million.
Computer Resellers
The largest computer reseller and support services business in the county for the second consecutive year is Technology Integration Group, which reported $285 million in local sales volume in fiscal year 2008, a 4 percent increase from the year before.
