Introduction

Provider organizations can take many different paths to improving service quality, but the overall goal is the same: making treatment a better experience for patients. This can involve improving timely access to treatment, addressing the needs of specific populations, reducing staff turnover to enhance caregiver continuity, improving organizational effectiveness and performance, and so on.

Established in 2001, the James W. West, MD, Quality Improvement Awards recognize addiction treatment organizations improving their services--and documenting their results along the way. The award is named in honor of a longtime quality-improvement advocate who is medical director emeritus at the Betty Ford Center. Recipients will be honored at the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers' annual conference next month.

In the following pages, this year's two winners describe aspects of their quality improvement programs. We hope you find their efforts informative, inspiring and, perhaps, worth emulating.
