Women who use oral contraceptives just prior to conception may be more likely than nonusers to experience adverse birth outcomes, according to a study of health records from the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.: Those who used the pill within 30 days of their last menstrual period had elevated odds of preterm birth and low birth weight, conditions that are associated with infant morbidity and mortality.

The researchers examined records from Saskatchewan Health Databases, which contain information on 99% of the province's residents. They obtained data on physician services, hospital stays and prescription drug use in the year prior to giving birth for a random sample of 50% of women...
