Stephen Skowronek's thesis about "political time"--an orderly, sequential pattern of regime decay and reconstruction and its consequences for leadership--is certainly one of the most influential frameworks in the study of the U.S. presidency. Not only has it inspired considerable research, but it has influenced the teaching of the presidency as well. Perhaps its key lesson, that presidents' leadership possibilities are constrained or expanded by their political circumstances, has provided an important corrective to the tendency of students and scholars alike to imagine that any president can be "great" if only he does the job right.
