Governments in the United States, Europe, and Asia are spending generously in an effort to jumpstart the economy. Overall, trillions will be available for a wide range of initiatives. As researchers in the areas of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration, what would be a wise investment of these funds from our point of view?
The most important drivers of new developments in general are global warming, the decreasing availability of easily accessible fossil fuels, the availability of scalable new technologies in the renewables arena, and the drive toward sustainability. All of these drivers are a direct consequence of the fact that the human population has grown to an extent that its actions on Earth are not negligible anymore. Quite the contrary, human activities increasingly affect the Earth's ability to supply the goods and services we are accustomed to and therefore will sooner or later impact our very survival.
