Virginia Cox has undertaken the ambitious project of synthesizing the last quarter-century's tremendous outpouring of research on women's writing in Renaissance Italy. The major problem for this nature of undertaking is how to bring coherence to such disparate and wide-ranging materials without creating a simplistic order that falsifies the complexities of reality. Cox has done a brilliant job of finding a framework that pulls together a vast amount of research while allowing for the inevitable loose threads and exceptions.
