"Like it or not" says one of the characters of Gina Barkhordar Nahai's Caspian Rain "there are things we allow ourselves and boundaries we don't cross" (148). The fourth novel by the Iranian-born author who now lives in Los Angeles is an extended meditation on these boundaries--those that subjects create for themselves, those to which they are subjected, and those that create subjectivities. More than anything, the narrative works through the interwoven stories of interdependent characters to expose the inescapable limit of human frailty.
