The Bethel School District's 5,800 students will have up to eight fewer school days next year, and teachers will see their paychecks shrink under a severe belt-tightening agreement ratified by teachers Wednesday.

Steadying for a projected $9 million shortfall in the fiscal year that starts July 1, district officials have been talking informally with union leaders for several weeks now, but they waited until firmer revenue and budget estimates came from Salem this week before taking proposals to the ranks.
