Based on the popular television programs of "Bachelor," "Bachelorette," "Blind Date," "Elimidate," and "'Next" an in-class exercise was developed and executed in five sections of a marriage and family course at a large southeastern university whereby students identified a homogamous (homogamy = similarity) partner and went out on a "real" date. Lecture/discussion of homogamy as a guiding principle to identify a partner with whom one is likely to have a happy/durable marriage preceded playing the exercise. Details of how to conduct the in-class exercise and feedback from the students are detailed.

With "having a family" remaining a top goal of a random sample of all first year U.S. university students (American Council on Education and University of California, 2007) and over ninety-five-percent of U.S. adults eventually marrying (Statistical Abstract of the United States 2008, Table 266), undergraduates remain interested in selecting potential partners for marriage. While traditional "dating" has metamorphosed into "hanging out"(England and Thomas, 2006) and "hooking up," (Stepp, 2007), an underlying motivation in selecting each other for fun times is to find a partner to pair off with and to marry. Since homogamous pairings are predictive of having a happy/durable marriage, undergraduates can benefit from learning how to identify a homogamous partner- a partner with whom they share similar characteristics. Students may also benefit from learning how to ask open-ended questions to assess future compatibility with a partner.

One of the challenges of college faculty is to develop in-class exercises which engage and inform students.
