The first Midstream issue that I worked on as a newly hired Editorial Consultant appeared in February/March 1990. It included an incisive article by Emanuel Rackman, co-authored with a young rabbi/lawyer named Michael Broyde. Its subtitle was "Halacha and the State of Israel," and it proceeded to refute a prevailing notion of the time that Orthodox Judaism was the major force behind the extreme political right wing in Israel that held a "no compromise position" vis-a-vis the Palestinians. The authors insisted that "the religious tradition of Judaism is demeaned ... by a few religious extremists" and that such uncompromising views were not typical of Orthodox Judaism as a whole. The article went on to chart the more flexible position of pursuing peace through compromise that was at the heart of historic Jewish law and practice (halacha).
