First Business Bank, with about $100 million in assets, is seeking to buy troubled 1st Pacific Bank of California, a University City-based bank more than four times its size, according to banking sources.

Ron Carlson, chief executive at 1st Pacific Bank, with $400 million in assets, declined to comment on negotiations, which sources said were in the latter stages.

"Nothing has been announced, and there's nothing I can discuss," Carlson said. "It's not clear whether we'll be doing any kind of merger or any kind of transaction."
