Olga Zorzi Pugliese. Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier (Il libro del Cortegiano): a Classic in the Making. Napoli: Edizioni Scientifiche Italiane, 2008.

In The Book of the Courtier, Baldassar Castiglione reported a series of conversations which were supposed to have taken place at the court of Guidobaldo da Montefeltro Duke of Urbino in March of 1507, but the work was not published until 1528 after going through several phases of re-elaboration. It is this process of revision which has become the almost unique preoccupation of Castiglione criticism in recent years. Ghino Ghinassi inaugurated this critical fashion in a series of groundbreaking publications from the 1960% and his lead has been followed by numerous scholars such as Jose Guidi, Claudio Scarpati, Uberto Motta, and Amedeo Quondam. Olga Pugliese, professor of Italian at the University of Toronto and director of the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies at Victoria College, can now be said to have furnished the summa of this trend in her new book on the making of the...
