A national program adopted on the Mississippi Gulf Coast is luring more women to the construction industry, a business historically dominated by men.

Since Moore Community House (MCH) in Biloxi began offering the Women in Construction (WinC) program last January, 36 low-income women have joined the ranks of construction workers along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

With a fifth session slated to begin soon, more than 200 women are on the waiting list. Each seven-week session can accommodate 15 to 20 women; the program is offered three or four times a year.

"If we had more funding, we could train more women," said Julie Kuklinski, director of the WinC program at MCH.
