Article Excerpt An at-will employee who was fired for refusing to violate a state administrative rule can sue for wrongful discharge, the Iowa Supreme Court has held. In its ruling, the state's highest court found that there were "elements of a cause of action in Iowa for wrongful discharge from employment when the reasons for the discharge contravene public policy." (Jasper v. H. Nizam, Inc., 2009 WL 151568 (Iowa Jan. 23, 2009).)
Mark Sherinian, a lawyer in West Des Moines, Iowa, who represented the plaintiff, said it was "one of the most significant rulings on wrongful discharge and public policy to come out of Iowa courts in a long time--and will be one of the most important throughout the country."
