FORMER SAS officer Tony Buckingham is making a killing on the stock market. Shares in his company Heritage Oil flew up 50p to 531p, valuing his 33pc stake at almost [pounds sterling]450m. The spike in the stock - which was subsequently suspended - accompanied news that Heritage is in early-stage merger talks.

Those in the know point to America's Imperial Petroleum Recovery Corporation (IPRC) as the most likely suitor.

It is a subsidiary of Houston-based Petrowave, which develops technology for petroleum and alternative energy exploration.
