THE saga began with cleavage and ended with pornography. Inbetween came policy disasters, humiliating U-turns and public incredulity over a highly-lucrative declaration that her sister's spare bedroom was her main residence.

That is the unflattering yet brutally accurate assessment historians will make of the two-year tenure of Britain's first female Home Secretary.

A solid but unspectacular junior minister whose only cabinet experience was as chief whip in the dying days of the Tony Blair government, there was surprise that Miss Smith was ever appointed to one of the highest offices of state in the first place.

At the time, the only explanation was that Gordon Brown - having been rebuffed by his first choice for the job, rumoured to be Alan Johnson - chose to seek the easy headline guaranteed by appointing a woman to one of the most senior posts in his first Cabinet.
