ANDREW STRAUSS today waves goodbye to England until the Ashes knowing he has proved he is the right man to lead them in one-day cricket towards the next 50over World Cup in two years' time.

That was by no means certain when he was hastily put in charge of all cricket before the Caribbean tour, but such has been the transformation of England and their captain over 50 overs since the nadir of their thrashing in Barbados that stability at the helm is assured.

Since going 2-1 down in the Caribbean, England have won four consecutive one-day internationals against the West Indies, improving with each performance to the point where they looked a vibrant and dynamic unit at Edgbaston in another one-sided contest yesterday, their final match before Strauss hands over to Paul Collingwood for the World Twenty20.

OK, it must be admitted that England have had to beat only a West...
