Back when John Debney was a kid, his Disney producer father would bring home loaner reels of "Bambi," "20000 Leagues Under the Sea," "Swiss Family Robinson" and other classics for family movie nights.

It was the job of the self-described "industry brat" to man the projector.

"It was probably around that time that I became enamored with the magic that can happen with music and film," says Debney, now 51.

"When the lights are off, and the movie would come up, and the theme music would come up, I always liked that. I think that was a seminal moment in my life."

Debney is conjuring up some of his own magic these days as one of Hollywood's most prolific and versatile film composers.
