Labor Market

Only one of South Dakota's major industries--information--posted an annual decline in employment from 2007 to 2008 with the loss of 200 workers. Overall, South Dakota nonfarm employment added 5,000 workers for this period. Education and health services accounted for 2,100 of the added workers.

According to preliminary estimates for February 2009, nonfarm wage and salaried employment in South Dakota was down 0.7 percent, or 2,700 jobs, over February 2008. The goods producing industries of natural resources, mining, construction and manufacturing accounted for a total of 3,800 job losses. Manufacturing alone lost 2,500 jobs for this period. The service providing industries added 1,100 workers for this period. Education and health services gained 2,000 jobs or an increase of 3.3 percent for this period.
