In the middle of the Amidah, the central set of prayers of the daily liturgy, we thank God for the regularity of the "miracles" that we know moment by moment. We praise God "al nisekha she-bkhol yom imanu." At Purim and Hanukkah, we add extra words for the salvation, mighty deeds, and victories that we have known throughout the ages.

One of these daily miracles that we experience is the continued vibrant existence of the sovereign state of Israel, a salvific fact achieved through mighty deeds and victories. This year, in particular we reflect upon the joyous event of the anniversary of Israel's birth, its 60th year of statehood.

Even as we do so, we marvel at the mystical and sacred synchronicity between modern events and ancient hallowed words. In the whole of the Bible, there are only two books, that contain a 60th chapter. These are the Book of...
