Article Excerpt Centrosema means spur on the back of the standard (Dean et. al 1973). Throughout the world, this genus exhibits flowers in white, violet, rose, pink, or blue on a total of 50 shrub and herb species, of which 45 are in the American tropics with approximately 30 being vines; three of which occur in the southeastern states with only one species being outside Florida (Small 1933, Gerth Van Wijk 1971, Willis 1973, Allen and Allen 1981, Venning 1984).
Spurred butterfly pea (C. virginianum) is common in Mississippi.
