Guido Bonsaver is the author of an excellent book on Vittorini (Elio Vittorini: The Writer and the Written, Leeds: Northern Universities Press, 2000) and the editor, with Robert S. C. Gordon, of an anthology treating Culture, Censorship and the State in Twentieth Century Italy (Oxford: Legenda, 2005). His new book, Censorship and Literature in Fascist Italy, builds on and expands these earlier works.

Censorship and Literature is divided into three sections. The first is devoted to the period between 1922 and 1933, when Fascism was beginning to flex its totalitarian grip; the second to the years from 1934 to 1939, when the grip began to tighten, the Ministry of Popular Culture was established, and the notorious anti-Semitic laws were enacted; the third to the war years 1940-1943 with the country now Nazi Germany's ally and censorship bearing down...
