Marianna Sirca is a novel about love and freedom. Like the love that appears in many of Grazia Deledda's works, the love here is doomed, as the conservative Sardinian community does not approve of a relationship between a wealthy landowner and a bandit. Despite this opposition, the lovers pursue their relationship, until the obsession of each with power and freedom threatens to destroy their common bond. The ending of the novel is a compromise between romance and realism, with a tragic death and an enactment of a symbolic wedding that will never be consummated. In Marianna Sirca, you encounter many of Deledda's favorite themes, such as class conflict and pride, passion and renunciation, and sin and redemption.
