Gloria Italiano's unabridged bilingual Italian-English text is based on the 1883 first edition of Carlo Collodi's Le avventure di Pinocchio. It opens with a Preface anda Foreword written by Annamaria Bernardinis and Christopher Kleinhenz, respectively. Bernardinis pays homage to Rolando Anzilotti, the founder of the Pinocchio Park in the town of Collodi, for his contribution to the "letteratura giovanile" (10), while Kleinhenz focuses on Pinocchio's universal appeal and praises Gloria Italiano Anzilotti's "very readable and stylistically graceful text" (11).

What sets Gloria Italiano's translation apart is a provision for cultural and temporal differences, achieved by anglicizing and modernizing Collodi's tale. As she translates with an ear attuned to American/English culture, Geppetto's casacca di panno becomes a "tweed jacket" (49), rosso come un peperone is "red as a hot chili pepper" (17), and...
