Manuele Gragnolati presents a masterly study of literary representations of the medieval shift in focus from the Last Judgment, when each human body after death is reconstituted with its soul, to the period of time after death that the human soul remains separated from its body. This shift in eschatological focus, according to Gragnolati, coincides with the emergence of the doctrine of purgatory in the late twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and the doctrine's ratification in 1336 by the papal bull Benedictus Deus. This study confirms Dante's masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, as the culminating representation of the medieval invention of purgatory and its myriad reconciliations of competing theological positions, most prominently, the thirteenth-century Scholastic controversy between the traditional doctrine of plurality of forms...
