NORTH BEND - Trevor Berrian spent two seasons as part of North Bend's state-championship cross country teams.

Last season, Berrian ran alongside a pair of current college runners.

Now a senior, Berrian gets his turn as the leader of the pack of distance runners at North Bend.

"It's definitely different training," Berrian said. "A lot more self-motivation to get out there. You have some days where you have to tell yourself to work harder. Those guys aren't with me anymore, but I still have to keep getting better. It is easy to slack off when you are the fastest guy on your team."

Berrian is one of the fastest guys in the state, ranking third among Class 4A runners in the 1,500 meters this year and eighth in the 3,000 despite not running much of the latter distance. Not that he is paying attention to those rankings.
