Unlike on his native Long Island, N.Y., Ken Rodgers' lacrosse players at Thurston High typically start the sport as they enter high school instead of elementary school.

The late start to the sport for most players presents a catch-22 that coaches around the state deal with every season: Would you rather have a player devote all his time to lacrosse and possibly develop quicker, or do you want a multi-sport athlete whose experience from several sports translates well to lacrosse?
