The spread of the so-called swine flu (actually a new combination of swine-bird-human flu) has everyone in a tizzy. But what are local officials doing to get us prepared?

Two years ago, I published a guest viewpoint titled "Pandemic flu: Ready or not?" I criticized the lack of transparency in local planning. Little has changed.

The most efficient transmission vehicles for influenza are schools and universities. If we get a severe pandemic (not just a mild one), classes must be closed to limit the spread of such a flu. That is the lesson from the disastrous flu of 1918, when many politicians dithered and people died.
