When the curtain rises tonight at the opening of Springfield High School's production of "Damn Yankees," it will mark the end of an era for Jonathan Siegle.

He's been a drama teacher at Springfield High School since 1983, the year he earned a master's degree in journalism from the University of Oregon.

At the end of this school year, on June 11, he'll retire. "Damn Yankees" will be the last show under his leadership at the school.

In the past quarter century, Siegle has been a constant presence in the Eugene area theater scene. He worked with the now defunct Oregon Repertory Theatre. He, Dorothy Velasco and Phil Dietz created Terra Nova Theater. More recently he's performed with Lane Summer Musical Theatre. He's written theater reviews and features for The Register-Guard.

As Siegle started thinking of retirement, he signed up for the first time with Facebook. In a flash, and to his surprise, 200 friends quickly appeared on his page - mostly former students. Wrote one, in a typical post, "You are the one teacher I talk most about when I tell people about growing up. Your unique style and insights make you memorable. Thank you for helping me become what I am today."
