Article Excerpt
It is essential to know and recognize the value that society, governments, and the nurses themselves place on nursing as a profession. A growing body of literature supports the value of nurses in the role they play in the care of patients. However, value may also reflect individual values, personal values, moral values, and organizational values, as well as the value found in nursing. The value in nursing is often reflected in terms associated with compassion, sense of worth, commitment, competence, responsibility, honesty, integrity, and making a difference, as well as in the skills and abilities of nurses. The focus of this article is the value as the perceived worth or the importance of nursing as a profession. Health care is constantly challenged with cost constraints and looking at nursing's ability to achieve results. With the nursing shortage likely to continue, particularly in specialty areas, demands to demonstrate the value of nursing will strengthen.

ANNA is a member of the Nursing Organizations Alliance, a coalition of 70 nursing organizations united to create a strong voice for nurses, and an Organizational Affiliate of the American Nurses Association (ANA). The Alliance is open to any nursing organization whose focus is to address current and emerging nursing and healthcare issues. One of the benefits of membership in the Alliance is the unique opportunity to network and build relationships with leaders of national nursing organizations. At the 2008 Fall Summit of the Alliance in Albuquerque. New Mexico. the Organizational Affiliates met with ANA's president, Rebecca M. Patton. and agreed to publish a consistent message to their members to speak to the value of professional nursing in May 2009. ANA drafted talking points that were reviewed by the ANA Organizational and Work Force Affiliates. ANNA is proudly participating in the recognition of the value of nursing this May.
