Everyone in New York thinks I'm just so, like, totally fabulous! No, really, they do. Nobody on that side of the Atlantic knows that I failed the eleven-plus, or that once, at the very first Reading Festival back in 1971, I drank a whole bottle of gin and ended up face down in the mud in a state of undress.
I am not the first fun-seeker to paddle across the pond, cover my tracks and attempt to reinvent away all my Thames Valley naffness. Manhattan has always been a welcoming and, most importantly, a forgiving destination for the trend-obsessed riffraff of the world.
