Author Tom Robbins, who once worked for the late Seattle Post-Intelligencer, understood the romance of newspapers. "There's something about the way ink bleeds into the paper," he told Seattle Metropolitan magazine. "Ink is the blood of language. Paper is the language's flesh."

Newspaper purists such as me would prefer hard-copy newspapers forever. But to ask whether we can maintain them in that form is to ask the wrong question.
