The garden beds could just as easily have been built outside the Hilyard Community Center, saving the gardeners a weekly bus ride across town.

But that would have defeated one of the primary aims of the city of Eugene's Adaptive Recreation Program: creating opportunities for meaningful mingling of citizens with and without disabilities.

"We wanted to be out in the community," explained recreation programmer and inclusion specialist Molly Elliott, distributing takeout burritos to members of a volunteer work crew at the Alton Baker Park community garden early Saturday afternoon.
