Article Excerpt Ruth Franzen, Ruth Rouse Among Students, Global, Missiological and Ecumenical Perspectives, Studia Missionalia Svecana CV, Uppsala, 2008, 415 pp plus index.
Professor Ruth Franzen presents an authoritative, vivid and sensitive history of the outstanding, visionary and influential Christian missionary leadership of Ruth Rouse (1872-1956) during a vital time of secularization, rapid change in the international world and the increasing education and courageous professional expectations of young women. It is a fascinating read of one of the early students of Girton College, Cambridge in 1890, whose warm evangelical faith was challenged by other students but who nevertheless proceeded to an unwavering lifelong commitment to world mission, integrated with deep ecumenical conviction. Equally, the account of the Victorian context, including the growing influence of feminism, contributes to the work of feminist scholars including Olive Banks (1981), who sees the rise in feminism closely associated with liberal Protestantism, religious individualism and the Quakers' encouragement of women's leadership. Franzen's biography of Rouse is totally integrated with the context.
