"Melt Down Monday," "A Failure of System," and "Collapse of Casino Capitalism."

These were the headlines of major British newspapers I read at the end of September on my flight to Edinburgh, Scotland. I was on my way to a preparatory meeting for the centenary celebration of the Edinburgh 1910 World Mission Conference. It was an ironical experience because recently the financial sections of those newspapers had been busy praising and defending the free-market system. Now, they had changed their tune and were insisting that governments must regulate the capital market and set moral values against the greedy hands of global capitalism.

In my mind, those newspaper headlines overlapped with decade-old images of the Asian economic crisis and the people who lost their jobs, houses and pensions then; in East Asia thousands of people committed suicide. I also thought of the panic and fears of ordinary people who will be most affected by the current crisis. Certainly, the bankers who are mainly responsible and will receive millions of dollars in compensation are not in a situation of personal crisis.

In the midst of the current global economic crisis, the theme of this issue of the International Review of Mission is "Evangelization of the Market: Mission in the Context of Economic Globalization".
