Article Excerpt Byline: The Register-Guard
Business crippled itself
"Union bill would cripple businesses" (Register-Guard, March 29) screams the headline in today's guest viewpoint. The author, Don Tykeson, ignoring the economic fact that, if unions had had any power to control our economy over the past 30 years, the fair distribution of wealth would have allowed us to bank a lot more of our economy in good loans, reduced the killing toll of poor health care on the average worker's family, and kept the bloated surplus of our false economy from going into the hands of the rapacious upper 1 percent, where they leveraged every bit of wealth until it disappeared from sight.
The author's intent is clear - impugn unions as much as possible without regard to facts or reasoning. The author has ignored the unassailable fact that businesses have crippled themselves by commoditizing labor to the extent of running jobs out of the country, and then turning around and saying "Hey! There are not enough people with good jobs that can afford our products!" Businesses did this deliberately and with malice aforethought, only the malice has returned to bite their own behinds.
Old ideas that business is king and that unions are detrimental to the health of the kingdom are long gone, supported by a few flacks who spray words in the wind like garden soil amendments. It's the many who are important now; the few will become important if they ever recognize the needs of everyone.
