CORVALLIS - Oregon State is at .500, and what the Beavers need to do now is play at that percentage to claim the championship of the College Basketball Invitational.

OSU held on Monday night to win the opening game of the CBI best-of-three championship series 75-69 over UTEP, sending the series to El Paso for a game Wednesday and, if necessary, Friday. Win once, and the Beavers have their first postseason title ever.

"We took care of business here," OSU's Roeland Schaftenaar said. "Now we have to try to win one of these games" in El Paso.

There's no question that's going to be a challenge. The Miners (22-13) left Gill Coliseum feeling they'd played less than their best, and it wouldn't have taken much more to complete a comeback that did take them from a 21-point deficit to within three points in the last 74 seconds.

The Beavers missed foul shots, and turned the ball over. UTEP was driving and lobbing for jams and hitting long three-pointers and OSU seemed to have no answer.
