The economy may be in a free-fall, but business is booming at the military recruiting office in Eugene's Santa Clara Square. The armed forces locally and nationwide are reporting a surge in interest as U.S. unemployment rises and violence in Iraq winds down.

"It's been crazy the last two to three months, especially around here," said Petty Officer Scott Fails, a Navy recruiter for the past 2' years. "So many people have lost their jobs."

Late last year and early this year, Lane County has been hit by the factory closures of Monaco Coach Corp., Country Coach and Hynix Semiconductor, and cutbacks at numerous smaller ventures, costing the region thousands of jobs.
