Many people know supper clubs as a restaurant and nightclub combination where people customers enjoy a high-end meal - along with the "high" of a well-stocked bar - followed by an evening of dancing or other entertainment.

However, another type of supper club has sprung up in recent years: Groups of friends get together regularly, usually rotating to each other's houses for potluck suppers - either bring-what-you-want or follow some particular cuisine or theme.

Several couples who live near the Central Oregon town of Sisters have taken the supper club genre to yet another level. In fact, they've turned their years of experience as the Sisters Supper Club, preparing meals for each other and selected non-member guests, into a new how-to book: "Dinner Is the Evening: Starting Your Own Stylish Yet Sensible Dinner Group."

The title of their book quotes the late Washington Post columnist, Art Buchwald: "Dinner is not what you do in the evening before something else. Dinner is the evening," Buchwald said.
